Do we truly believe that Christ is present in the Eucharist: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity? It is more than a fair question to ask. Given how we take part in the Mass every weekend. At some point in our lives, however, taking part in Holy Communion becomes all to routine and far too common. To the point that each weekend becomes a reply of the previous. With very few variations in what goes on. It reaches a point where it becomes way too easy to lose focus on what is going on because we have become so use to how things are.
During one of his homilies a priest one said that members of the church have "lost our sense of the supernatural" as it relates to the Eucharist. To an extent this is true. We have a tendency to believe what we see and reject what we can’t. That means no longer accepting that supernatural things can take place in our world. Being part of the faith means that we, on some level, should accept that their is indeed more to the world than what we see in front of us. That some elements of our lives take on a more spiritual aspect.
The world is full of endless distraction and even at Mass we can lose our focus. Our attention can easily be pulled in many directions. Often at the worse times. Such as during the consecration. When our eyes should be focused on our Lord, but often it is not. Most of the times our eyes are wandering around and not even looking directly at the altar. Part of this is because we get into this routine and take things for granted. We believe that we will always have Mass and the Eucharist. Recent history says this is a wrong view to have.
Another element is that Catholics no longer have an understanding of the spiritual. Unless it is directly before our eyes we cannot seem to understand or accept it. It becomes difficult to accept that simple bread and wine can become the body and blood of our Savior. We take part in the Mass but we simply no longer believe that God can do anything that powerful in this current time.
History, however, tells us differently. In fact if you look though the history of the church you see so many times when God did things that simply defied what the world understands. Such as the Miracle of the Sun. Or the many Eucharistic miracles that have taken place and are still happening to this day. Moments here the host has turned into literal flesh and blood. In many cases turning into very heart of Christ. Elements of life that science is unable to explain. This is the kind of stuff that reminds us that God is still very much present in our lives and we should pay attention.
As Catholics we really need to do better at understanding and learning about what is taking place on a supernatural level when we attend Mass. The bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of our Savior. To understand what our role is in this. We need to have a faith and understanding that goes way past what the world demands that we accept. The world has always gone out of it's way to reject Christ. Often times by minimizing the importance of the Eucharist and rejecting the spiritual and supernatural aspects of what we believe. Which is why our focus in this world should always be on Christ. Even during Mass.
Do we truly believe that Christ is present in the Eucharist: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity? A fair question to be asked. Perhaps we should take some time to reflect on this. Figure out the roadblocks we have in our lives that prevent us from truly believing this. Then we can fully accept and truly embrace Christ our Savior. -
