Using our gifts and talents

“I’m showing that no matter what challenge or disability you face God can still use your talents.”

This is the main element of my mission statement. One that I’ve been using for a very long time. A reflection of what my goal is with The Lego Church Project. It is something that I mention in almost every encounter that I have. As The Project is something that I’ve become slightly known for. Either though the public displays or from the many interviews I’ve given. Important conversations as it relates to me living the Catholic faith with a mild from of cerebral palsy.

God gives us some amazing gifts and talents. It is up to us as believers to decide on how we will use those. Do we keep these gifts and talents hidden from view. To be kept from everyone around us? Or do we freely share the blessings that God has provided for us. We have moments in our lives where these talents can be used in such important and meaningful ways. We just have to make the choice to do so.

As Catholics we are all called to evangelize. With the talents and our gifts God can work though us. To show everyone around us how important following Christ is in our lives. Living by example of what God has given and is doing for us. Many times God gives us the chance to use our talents to be the light in someone’s life.

Some may read this and argue that God hasn’t given them any kind of special gift for talent. I would argue that this is far from the truth. For some that gift is big and grand. Like the ability to build giant churches out of LEGO with no architecture related skills. For others that gift is more subtle. Like a quiet whisper. Such as being a good listener to a friend who is having some challenges. Or even the ability to focus on prayer for those around them. If you don’t know what gifts or talents God has given you. Pray and ask the Lord to show you.

My personal feeling is that what God gives us as far as talents or gifts is not as important. Rather what is important is how we decide to use them. Do we use our talents and gifts to give glory to God in all things? Do we use our talents and gifts to share the faith creatively? Do we use our talents and gifts to be a light in the world that is often filled with chaos and darkness? These are questions that I often ask myself as I share what God has given me.

If we are willing to use our gifts and talents for the Glory of God then all things become possible. In those moments we can use this as a form of active prayer. In some cases even becoming the answer to someone’s prayer because of what God has given us.

May the Holy Spirit give us a desire to share our gifts and talents with others. -
