This July my parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Which in this current time is no small feat. Spending their lives together for such a long time. Living through so many joys, sorrows, and challenges along the way. Yet their love remains as strong as it has ever been. A testament to the commitment they made to God and to each other. Even as the years move on and time slowly slips though our fingers.

Over the years I’ve learned a lot through their example. I’ve seen how my parents have taken on many things in life. Seeing what goes on and doing what I can to apply the lessons and wisdom I have gained.

The last fifty years the road has not always been an easy one to travel. My mom’s health issues have taught us that much. I’ve been able to see how my father has been there for my mom. Even on the days when things are far more difficult. I’ve also seen my mom be there for my dad. Sometimes as the anchor keeping us firmly on land. Seen them be there for each other gives me a sense of wisdom on how to navigate my own struggles and challenges.

Speaking of wisdom that is one of the many things I’ve learned from my dad. Learning how to look at the issues from as many views as one can. To make the best decisions based on what info we have on hand. Along with making those decisions not based on any kind of fear response. But a realistic understanding of how things are playing out.

What I have learned from my mom is how to have a deeper level of faith that is not always seen. How to be a witness to what God has done for us in our lives. This understanding that God’s will be done and sometimes all we can do is ride out the storm. Even when doing that can be a challenge all its own.

As I reflect on their fifty years of marriage. I also have learned from them both on what it means to be Catholic. To trust the Holy Spirit no matter what is going on. To learn how treat each other in times of sickness and in good health. To be present no matter what is going on. They are truly examples of what takes place when you put God first in all that you do.

Fifty years is a long time. Please keep Mike and Mary in prayer. -JM
