Shieldbearers Catechism for Children

This is a deeper guide to the Catholic faith, helping children grow in understanding, conviction, and love for the truth.

Each lesson includes a clear truth, a fuller explanation, a short reflection, and a simple action to help children live what they believe.

These lessons can be used at home, in school, or in a group setting.

Part 1 — The Creed

We learn who God is, what He has revealed, and what the Church teaches us to believe.

Lesson 1 — The Purpose of Man’s Existence

Truth: God made me to know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in the next.

Explanation: My life is not random. God made me with a real purpose: to belong to Him, live for Him, and reach heaven with Him.

Reflection: My life has a purpose that reaches beyond this world.

Action: Begin today by saying: “God, help me live for You.”

Lesson 2 — God and His Perfections

Truth: God is infinitely perfect.

Action: Praise God for one of His perfections today.

Lesson 3 — The Unity and Trinity of God

Action: Thank God for one thing in creation that fills you with wonder.

Lesson 5 — The Creation and the Fall of Man

Reflection: Sin is not small, because it breaks friendship with God.

Action: Ask God for a more obedient heart today.

Lesson 6 — Actual Sin

Truth: Actual sin is any wilful thought, word, deed, or omission against the law of God.

Explanation: Sin is not only doing wrong; it can also be refusing the good I know I should do. Sin darkens the soul and weakens love.

Reflection: I need to take my choices seriously.

Action: Examine one choice you made today and ask whether it led you toward God or away from Him.

Lesson 7 — The Incarnation

Truth: The Son of God became man.

Explanation: Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. He took on our human nature without ceasing to be divine.

Reflection: In Jesus, God came close enough for us to know Him.

Action: Say slowly: “Jesus, true God and true man, help me follow You.”

Reflection: Sin begins in the heart before it shows itself in actions.

Action: Thank God today for what you already have instead of comparing yourself to others.

Action: Pray an Act of Contrition slowly and attentively today.

Lesson 31 — Confession

Truth: In Confession I must tell my sins honestly and completely.
